We’ll be honest, the first time we made this drive, we almost turned back at Tabanan. Three-plus hours from Seminyak, zero beach clubs in sight, and a road that keeps going long after you think it should have stopped. And then the coast opens up, the traffic disappears, and you realise, this is the Bali we’d been looking for.
Taman Nasional Bali Barat covers over 19,000 hectares of dry forest, savanna, mangroves, and coral reef. The special is in here there’s less crowds, no Instagram walls, no one trying to sell you a boat tour. Just wildlife, silence, and one of the best snorkelling and diving spots on the island sitting right offshore.
The rest of Bali is beautiful and well-organized and full of people doing the same itinerary. But West Bali is none of those things. Because the infrastructure is minimal, the tourist footprint is low, and the wildlife is genuinely in charge. We saw banteng (wild Javan ox) on our second morning. You don’t get that in Seminyak.
What you do get is Menjangan Island’s coral walls, the Bali Starling breeding center, mangrove kayaking at sunrise, and that specific kind of quiet that only happens when you’ve actually gotten away. If your Bali trip so far has felt like one long highlight reel, this is the antidote. 🌟
The park sits at Bali’s far western tip, split across Buleleng regency to the north and Jembrana to the south. Three points to know: Cekik (Jembrana) is the official main gate park HQ, visitor center, and where you buy your entry permit. Banyuwedang on the north coast is the jetty for Menjangan Island boats. Pemuteran, 20 km east, is the closest town with real accommodation, restaurants, and dive shops.
From Denpasar it’s 3 to 3.5 hours. From Seminyak or Canggu, add 30 to 45 minutes. Yes, it’s far. We’ll tell you why that’s worth it.
The park’s big draw on land is the stunning white bird with a blue eye mask that exists nowhere else on earth. The wild population has at times dropped below 20 individuals, which makes spotting one feel like an actual privilege. The park also has barking deer, long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, and the endangered Javan banteng roaming the Prapat Agung peninsula. That peninsula is a mix of dry forest, savanna, and mangrove on the park’s western edge, and feels nothing like tropical Bali. More like a nature documentary.🏝
Offshore, Menjangan Island is ringed by a coral wall that drops almost vertically from just below the surface. Visibility can reach 30 to 40 meters on good days. This is genuinely one of the best dive and snorkel sites in Bali and it sees a fraction of the visitors that Nusa Penida does.
Here’s something most Bali guides miss: West Bali stays dry November through March. While the rest of the island is getting rained on, this corner sits in a rain shadow and barely notices. That makes it one of the few Bali destinations that works year-round. That said, if underwater visibility is your priority, aim for May, June, or September is the dry season with fewer crowds than the July – August peak.
Don’t rush it. The North Bali coast road past Singaraja is one of the most underrated drives on the island, steep hills, black sand beaches, fishing villages, and basically no traffic.
If you’re coming from the south, we strongly recommend stopping overnight in Munduk. It sits at 1,200 meters, surrounded by coffee and clove plantations, and it breaks the drive perfectly. You’ll arrive at the park well-rested instead of road-frazzled.
First of all Hire a driver/safari, second of all public transport is non-existent inside the park, and the distances between Cekik, Banyuwedang, Pemuteran, and Gilimanuk are too spread out to manage without wheels. Most resorts can arrange one, or negotiate a day rate directly. Confident riders can also rent a motorbike in Pemuteran. We will find the solution for you !

Options are limited and that’s part of what keeps this place feeling remote. No hotel chains, no resort strips. Book early, especially in the dry season. These three properties are the main choices.
Honesty first, dining options around West Bali National Park are thin. This isn’t a place you visit for the food scene. Most guests eat at their resort restaurant, and for stays of two or three nights that’s not a hardship, but it’s worth knowing before you arrive. The nearest town with any meaningful restaurant variety is Pemuteran, about 20 kilometres east of the park.
3 to 3.5 hours by car via the North Bali coast road. The private driver recommended around IDR 700,000 to 900,000 for a full day. Your first stop once you arrive should be Cekik (main gate in Jembrana) to pick up your park entry permit. From there, Banyuwedang jetty for Menjangan boats is about 15 minutes north.
We recommend breaking the drive with an overnight in Munduk. It’s a completely different landscape and makes the journey feel like it’s already started.
From Ubud, allow 3.5 hours via Singaraja. From Singaraja itself, you’re looking at 1.5 hours west along the coast. The Bedugul mountain road is scenic and worth taking slowly if time allows.
Gilimanuk is 24/7 ferry service to Ketapang (Banyuwangi) in East Java gateway to Kawah Ijen. Crossing takes 45 to 60 minutes. Buy tickets at the port, no booking needed for foot passengers.
West Bali plays by different rules. Here’s what we wish someone had told us before we showed up in regular sunscreen with no cash and big expectations.
🚫 The Rules That’ll Save Your Trip
West Bali National Park is protected — and they actually enforce it. A few things that catch people off guard:
🪸 Reef-safe sunscreen only. Rangers at Menjangan check before you enter the water. Chemical sunscreen is destroying what’s left of Bali’s reefs — this one’s non-negotiable. Brands like Reef Repair, Stream2Sea or Raw Elements are your go-to. Buy before you leave home; options near the park are scarce.
🐚 Don’t touch the ocean floor. No shells, no coral, no “just one little piece.” Prohibited, full stop.
🛕 Temples are active worship sites. No photos inside without permission from the pemangku (temple priest). Dress respectfully — sarong and sash, always.
🚤 No guide = no entry + possible fine. Especially on Menjangan Island. The guide rule isn’t optional; it’s enforced at the jetty.
The rules exist because this place still works. Respect them and it’ll reward you with something rare — a Bali that actually feels untouched.

You don’t always need to be a photographer. You just need to show up at the right time.
ATMs in Gilimanuk and Pemuteran are not inside the park. Carry cash. Basic supplies are available in Pemuteran; the park area itself has almost nothing. Stock up before you go in.
Perfect combination. Get your ferry from Gilimanuk to Ketapang, 3 to 4 hours to the Ijen trailhead from there. The blue fire hike is a pre-dawn start book accommodation in Banyuwangi or Bondowoso before you cross. We did this exact route and it felt like the ideal end to a Bali trip.
Yes, with older kids (8+). Snorkelling is great for them, the Bali Starling center is genuinely interesting, and the wildlife aspect lands well. Come prepared, the nearest proper shop is a drive away, so bring snacks, sunscreen, and everything you'd need in a remote area.

The natural stop between South Bali and the national park and our favourite place to break the drive. Munduk sits at 1,200 meters surrounded by coffee and clove plantations, waterfall trails, and clean mountain air. Stay a night rather than just stopping for coffee, and the pace there resets something.
If you want to extend your time in the area, Pemuteran is worth a night or two on its own. The Biorock coral restoration projectoffshore is a genuinely interesting dive site, electric-stimulated coral regrowth that’s been running for years and has created its own small ecosystem. Quieter than Menjangan, different character, good dive operators in the village.
The logical next chapter if you’re coming through Gilimanuk. Ijen’s caldera holds a turquoise acid lake, one of the world’s largest and the pre-dawn hike reveals the famous blue fire, sulphuric gases burning electric blue in the dark. It’s tough, it smells awful without a mask, and it’s completely unforgettable. Get to Banyuwangi or Bondowoso the night before; the trailhead is about 2 hours from the Java port.
