Million Dollar Point 4x4 Private Tour, Skip The 2 Hour Trek to Sunset or Sunrise
Skip the headlamp-lit scramble up Mount Batur. A private 4x4 drives you straight to Million Dollar Point instead, one spot with views of Mount Batur, Lake Batur, Mount Abang, Mount Agung and the Indian Ocean, just a 10-minute walk in. We arrange this through Expedition Bali Tours, and cover the wider region in our Kintamani & Mount Batur Honeymoon Guide. In here we didnt just recommend the guide but also its must-listed add-on for your jeep honeymoon adventure, contact us for more detail specific question.
We Did This Tour Ourselves
We booked the sunrise tour and were picked up from our hotel while it was still pitch dark. The 4x4 made light work of the rough track up to Kintamani, and unlike the main Batur trail, there was no line of headlamps ahead of us, just our guide and the two of us, no one else. The walk up was easy, and the payoff was worth the early alarm: the whole caldera lighting up in front of us, Agung, Abang and Batur all visible from one spot without moving an inch.
Meet Your Ride
This isn’t a repurposed tourist van.The vehicles are custom built specifically for Kintamani’s rough volcanic terrain, no matter the weather, with weather protection unlike anything else running tours in Bali, rollover protection, and a seatbelt for everyone. Other tour companies aspire to have a vehicle like it. You’ll appreciate it once you feel the track, it’s genuinely bumpy, and it makes a real difference over a standard car.
The guides are locals who’ve lived in the Kintamani area their entire lives, which shows in how they read the weather and time the walk up. Safety is taken just as seriously as the terrain: the whole operation is overseen by the company’s CEO, an ex-Safety Manager for an Australian mining company, so small fire extinguishers, grip tape on the steps and a medical kit are all standard on board, and the vehicle is serviced at half the manufacturer’s recommended interval rather than the bare minimum.
Sunrise or Sunset: Choose Your Moment
Both tours use the same viewpoint, but they’re two very different moods, so choose based on what you and your partner would enjoy more.
- Sunrise Tour (4:30AM start): You’ll leave your hotel while it’s still dark, walk up by LED light, and watch the sun rise over the caldera with Mount Rinjani visible across the sea on clear days. This is the more popular pick and, in our opinion, the more dramatic one, but it does mean an early wake-up call.
- Sunset Tour (4:00PM start): A gentler start time, ending with the sky turning gold behind Mount Batur. Good for couples who’d rather sleep in. One honest caveat: this tour is only reliable during the dry months (May–August). Outside of these months, afternoon clouds regularly roll in over Kintamani and can block the sunset view entirely, so if a clear sunset really matters to you, plan your trip dates accordingly or book the sunrise instead.
Sunrise Tour:
- 04:00 🚗 Hotel pick-up (transfer time is 1–2.5 hours depending on your accommodation)
- 04:30 đźš™ Depart Kintamani meeting point by private 4x4
- 05:20 🚶 10-minute walk to Million Dollar Point
- 05:30 🌄 Sunrise over Mount Batur, Lake Batur, Mount Abang, Mount Agung and the Indian Ocean, Rinjani too on a clear day
- 07:00 🌋 Stop at the black lava fields, a lunar-looking landscape from Batur’s past eruptions
- 07:20 🦇 Visit the Kintamani Bats, visible in daylight on an open cliff face
- 08:30 đźš— Drop back at meeting point, transfer to hotel
Sunset Tour:
- 16:00 đźš™ Depart Kintamani meeting point by private 4x4
- 16:40 🚶 10-minute walk to Million Dollar Point
- 17:00 🌅 Sunset behind Mount Batur, with Mount Abang, Mount Agung and the Indian Ocean in view
- 18:00 đźš— Return to meeting point
A gentler wake up call, but one honest note before you pick sunset: it’s genuinely weather-dependent outside the dry season. From roughly September to April, afternoon clouds tend to roll in over Kintamani right around golden hour. If you’re visiting outside May to August and a clear sunset matters to you, we’d steer you toward sunrise instead.
Frozen Lava Fields & the Kintamani Bats
After sunrise, the tour doesn’t just head straight back down. First stop is a stretch of black lava field left behind from Batur’s past eruptions, the kind of landscape that genuinely looks lunar rather than tropical, a strange contrast after watching a golden sunrise minutes earlier. From there, it’s on to the Kintamani Bats, and this is where the tour does something no one else in the area does: unlike bats that hide away in caves or darkness, these cluster together in the open on a cliff face and under a rock ledge, fully visible in daylight. It’s an easy, close up look that works well for kids too, no torches, no waiting for dusk, just point and watch.
Why We Trust This Operator
Expedition Bali Tours has been running in Kintamani since 2012, longer than anyone else in the area, and was named Private Tour Operator of the Year 2024/2025 by the Luxury Travel Guide Awards. Every tour is capped at 6 guests and kept exclusive to your booking, so you’re never sharing your jeep, or your view of the sunrise, with strangers.

Add Ons
Lunch & Swim at Desa Oculus
Ask us to add on Desa Oculus (“Oculus Village”), a rooftop dining and pool concept a short drive from the viewpoint. We stopped here ourselves after our tour, and it turned out to be our favorite part of the whole morning: Mount Batur filling the entire window as we lingered over drinks, then a quiet hour on the daybeds by the infinity pool, angled so the volcano looks like it spills right into the water.

Terunyan Wall Cemetery Boat Tour
A private boat journey across Lake Batur to the sacred Terunyan Wall Cemetery, one of Bali’s most unique cultural sites, where bodies are laid out in the open rather than buried or cremated, protected only by a rare local tree said to neutralize the smell of decay. It’s a solemn, genuinely eye opening detour rather than a relaxing one, and not really recommend for honeymoon for every couple, except if you’re drawn to Bali’s culture beyond its beaches, this add on comes with a guidebook and covers the village donation, so nothing extra to arrange on your end.

Key Points to Summarize
| POINT | SUMMARY |
|---|---|
| 🚗 Transfer Time | 1 to 2.5 hours to Kintamani depending on where you’re staying. Pairs best with a stay in Kintamani or Ubud, rather than a quick add on from South Bali. |
| 🥾 The Walk | Easy, but loose volcanic gravel in the dark. Real walking shoes matter more than they sound like they would. |
| đź”’ Private Tour Pricing | Sits higher than a shared group jeep, contact us for current rates. For a couple, we think the privacy at the viewpoint is worth it. |
| ♿ Accessibility | Suitable for all fitness levels, service animals allowed, infants welcome on an adult’s lap. Good for less mobile members of your group. |

Pair It With More of Kintamani
Since you’re already up in the highlands, it’s worth building a fuller day around the tour. Many couples follow sunrise with a soak at the Batur Natural Hot Springs, or breakfast at one of the ridge road coffee shops like Ritatkala Cafe or Paperhills. All of this, along with where to stay in the area, is covered in our Kintamani & Mount Batur Honeymoon Guide.
